Welcome to the latest edition of "Nick's News," which is my monthly newsletter covering what I'm working on at City Hall, as well as upcoming events in the City of Burbank. In this edition we will cover:
A brief recap of the developments at Burbank City Hall in June 2021.
A preview of City Council meetings scheduled for July 2021.

I would like to begin by sharing that the City of Burbank is celebrating our 110th anniversary today, July 8th. Since its incorporation in 1911, we've navigated a path from agriculture to industry, from aircraft manufacturing to film production, all while maintaining the neighborhoods and small-town feel that draw people here today.
We're proudly the media capitol of the world. We are a city with a long tradition of entrepreneurship and one-of-a-kind small businesses. A town that built the airplanes that helped us win World War II. We are a community with a hardworking, skilled, and talented workforce. This summer, the City of Burbank invites you to explore your community and its history through events and activities for the whole family.
There will be several community events this month to celebrate our 110th anniversary including:
July 8th - Burbank City Hall will be lit in blue tonight on the anniversary of our incorporation.
July 8th @ 7:00 PM - Join local Burbank historians and authors Michael McDaniel and Wesley Clark as they present “Looking Back at Burbank.” They will share some of their favorite stories and anecdotes from our City’s past.
July 8th to July 31st - Explore our hometown and snap a selfie with our founder, Dr. David Burbank, at eleven locations. Share your photographs on social media by using #burbank110 and tagging the City of Burbank on Facebook and/or Instagram, to win a "Burbank at 110" commemorative coin.
July 8th to August 31st - Celebrate "Burbank at 110" by entering the Burbank Public Library’s digital photo contest using the theme: Burbank, My Hometown. Twelve winning photos will be selected by the Friends of the Burbank Public Library and will be used to create a 2022 calendar.

Recap of June 2021
Each month I summarize the notable events at City Council during the prior month. Below is a brief recap of the Burbank City Council meetings held in June 2021:
June 1, 2021 - There was no City Council meeting.
June 8, 2021 - This meeting started with a proclamation recognizing June 2021 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual (LGBTQIA+) Pride Month for the first time in Burbank's history. The City Council then conducted a joint meeting with the BUSD School Board in which the following topics were discussed: (1) Updates on BUSD-BFD Vaccine Clinics; (2) Community Childcare; (3) BUSD Reopening Plans; (4) Memorandum of Understanding for Cooperative Use of Swimming Pools; (5) School Resource Officers; and (6) Opportunities for Improved Communication to BUSD Students. After completing that portion of the meeting, the City Council adopted its extensive consent calendar, which included the appropriation of funds to remove hazardous waste debris at the Americold Property, and extension of Burbank Water & Power's COVID-19 Job Loss Bill Credit Program. The City Council also conducted a public hearing regarding a proposed ordinance to update city regulations to allow for supportive housing, transitional housing, and emergency shelters in accordance with state law. Lastly, the City Council approved the 2021 City of Burbank Investment Policy and reviewed the City Treasurer's Portfolio Report for March 31, 2021. June 15, 2021 - There was no City Council meeting.
June 22, 2021 - The City Council held a regularly scheduled meeting in which a substantial consent calendar was adopted at the start of the meeting. Of note, the City Council adopted an ordinance to update city regulations to allow for supportive housing, transitional housing, and emergency shelters in accordance with state law. The City Council also adopted an urgency ordinance allowing restaurants to use their parking lots for outdoor dining, as well as an urgency ordinance extending the local commercial eviction moratorium. Next, the City Council approved an agreement with Family Promise of the Verdugos to implement a Rapid Rehousing Program. During this meeting, the BWP 2020 Urban Water Management Plan and Water Shortage Contingency Plan was reviewed and approved. The City Council also discussed updates to the Rancho Providencia Neighborhood Protection Plan and allocated $150,000 for neighborhood protection efforts. The City Council approved BWP's electric vehicle commercial charging station rebate program. Lastly, the City Council discussed parking management at the Burbank Farmers Market. June 29, 2021 - There was no City Council meeting.
Lastly, there were several noteworthy community events this past month with the state's reopening on June 15th. Of note, I had the opportunity to attend the Burbank Chamber of Commerce's Re-Open House Mixer, tour the new Emergency Department being constructed at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, and celebrated the opening of the Burbank YMCA's Social Impact Center.
Outside of City Council meetings, I have continued to represent the City of Burbank on the Board of Directors for the Valley Economic Alliance. I have also been regularly attending meetings of both the Sustainable Burbank Commission and the Burbank Police Commission to serve as a resource for the commissioners.

The Burbank City Council will be meeting twice during the month of July. There will be many important topics of conversation during these upcoming meetings. Below is a list of the meeting dates and tentative agenda items:
July 6, 2021 - There was no City Council meeting.
July 13, 2021 - This City Council meeting will begin with issuance of a proclamation recognizing July 2021 as "Parks and Recreation Month." The Interim Chief of Police, Michael Albanese, will also be officially introduced to the Burbank City Council at the start of the meeting by the City Manager. Next, the City Council will consider a lengthy consent calendar, which will include our advocacy efforts during the 2021 redistricting process to preserve the representation of Burbank, Glendale, and Pasadena in the same electoral districts. The bulk of this meeting will involve the City Council's selection of 27 people to serve on the various boards, commissions, and committees that advise and assist the City Council in our work for the city. We will also review and approve the new COVID-19 residential recovery assistance program coordinated by Burbank Water and Power (BWP), as well as the city's low-income assistance programs. There will also be a resolution for a draft initial study of the Burbank Operable Unit (BOU) Remediation System Upgrades Project presented to the City Council for our approval. Lastly, the City Council will receive an update on the Intermountain Power Plant, which continues to serve as an energy source for BWP. Please click here to view the complete meeting agenda.
July 20, 2021 -There will be no City Council meeting.
July 27, 2021 - The City Council will review our Development Impact Fee Funds and consider approval of a Memorandum of Understanding between the City of Burbank and the Burbank Unified School District to provide for the cooperative use of McCambridge Swimming Pool. We will also consider adoption of a resolution authorizing acceptance of a 2020 Urban Areas Security Initiative Grant totaling $633,753. Next, the City Council will receive a report from city staff introducing an ordinance to amend Section 6-1-1501 of the Burbank Municipal Code, which pertains to the prima facie speed limits on city streets. Lastly, there will be an update provided by the Burbank Police Department on the parking citation appeal and payment plan processes for individuals adversely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
